Zero Waste Festival
Festival season is upon us and this year festival goers are being urged to be more conscious of their ecological footprint. For the first time this year Glastonbury Festival will not have single-use plastic drinks bottles for sale or backstage – in 2017 they recycled 40 tonnes of plastic bottles! If you are heading to a festival this year, we’ve put together the perfect eco-friendly and zero waste festival kit.
Zero Waste festival food and drink
Reusable Water Bottle
These are top of the list, with Glastonbury banning the sale of single-use plastic bottles this year, and 60 other festivals signing up to be plastic free by 2021. Staying hydrated when you’re partying all day (and night) is so important, and most festival sites will have refill stations to top up when you need to. Klean Kanteen stainless steel bottles are lightweight, hard wearing and the insulated will keep your drink chilled all day long.
Reusable Coffee Cup
For that all important morning cup of coffee, ditch the single use coffee cup and bring your own reusable cup instead. Stand out from the crowd with a bamboo Ecoffee cup – a sustainable choice that comes in a huge range of patterns and colours to suit your style.
Stainless Steel Cups and Reusable Straws
Stainless steel cups are the sustainable and plastic free option for your drink of choice – and if you like your cocktail with a straw, don’t forget to bring a reusable one!
Bamboo Cutlery Set
Whatever’s on the menu, a bamboo cutlery set will save any needles plastic waste – we love the Bambu Eat and Drink Toolkit, it’s ethically made from organic bamboo, and is naturally anti-bacterial and stain resistant. It includes a knife, fork, spoon, spork, chopsticks, straw and straw cleaner – the perfect little kit for camping and festivals.
Zero Waste Festival Toiletries
Bamboo Toothbrushes and Toothbrushes Tablets
Such a compact, lightweight, plastic free swap, bamboo toothbrushes are the eco-friendly alternative to plastic toothbrushes. Tooth tablets are perfect for camping just take as many as you need, and keep your teeth clean and mouth fresh for a full day of festival fun.
Shampoo Bars, Soap Bars and Cleansing Bars
Save on space and plastic bottles with a solid shampoo, soap bar and facial cleanser. Lamazuna are from beautiful natural ingredients, ethically made, vegan and cruelty free, staying clean and fresh at a festival doesn’t have to leave a huge plastic footprint. Beauty Kubes are a great two in one plastic free product for washing your hair and body and smell amazing- no need to take separate soap and shampoo bars!
Olew Hair Oil
This makes a great alternative to conditioner and smells amazing. For fabulous festival hair, put a few drops of Olew into your palm and scrunch or smooth onto wet or dry hair.
Menstrual Cup
These are a great stress free way to enjoy a festival on your period. With a bit of practice menstrual cups are easy to use and you won’t even know your wearing it. It’s a good idea to have a little (reusable) water bottle to hand to rinse it out, periods are an everyday part of life and shouldn’t get in the way of having fun!
Reusable Wipes
We are all becoming more aware of the problems wet wipes cause in our sewerage systems watercourses – choose washable cloth wipes to freshen up while you’re at a festival to help protect the environment. Keep them dry and wet as you need them, or if you are just away for a couple of nights, pre-wet some and keeping a sandwich box ready for use. Store the dirty ones in a wet bag ready to wash when you get home.
Plastic Free Deodorant
A really great way to stay smelling fresh at a festival without producing plastic waste is by choosing a natural deodorant in a cardboard tube. Both Ben & Anna and Earth Conscious are natural deodorant sticks that are vegan friendly and come in a recyclable cardboard tube.
If you are one of the hundreds of thousands of people heading to a festival this summer – have FUN and bask in the knowledge that your festival experience will be a sustainable one!
