Babipur Book Club – Lantana Publishing

We are so excited to launch our first collection of books here at Babipur with the Babipur Book Club! Jolene, Peter, and the team have been taking time to reflect on the events of this year and what we as a business, as individuals, and as a community can do better. At Babipur, we believe that Black lives matter, today and every day. We will speak out about injustice and intolerance, using our influence for change.

Babipur stand alongside anyone fighting for racial justice in solidarity. We stand with colleagues, family, friends, and our anyone in our community who have experienced pain, grief and injustice, both now and in the past.

One of our ongoing commitments at Babipur is to source ethical and sustainable products that reflect the diversity of communities around the world. We have a growing range of dolls and toys with a variety of skin tones and hair styles, so that every child may have toys which look like them.

But we can always do better. We continue to challenge the way we work, the way we represent our communities, and the language that we use around inclusion and diversity. We acknowledge that both within our team and our community that Black, Indigenous and People of Colour are underrepresented. Black lives matter and Black voices matter and we continue to grow, to listen, and to learn.

Lantana Publishing

To launch the Babipur Book Club, we have chosen to work with Lantana Publishing, an award winning children’s book publisher and social enterprise. Lantana has a mission to publish inclusive books and they are changing the game of publishing. Specialising in commissioning books that celebrate diversity, equality, and environmental sustainability, we knew there were a perfect partnership with Babipur.

In the UK, a third of school children identify as being Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic (BAME), but yet less than 5% of children’s books are representative of BAME characters. Further to this, less than 2% are authors or book creators represented by British people of colour. Sadly, even less than this are representative of the LGBTQ+ communities or disabled.

Lantana believes that every child deserves to see themselves in the books they read, and we wholeheartedly agree.

The Books

We have a small collection of children’s book titles from Lantana Publishing to share with you, but we anticipate this growing this in the coming months. We have chosen titles that reflect diversity and inclusion in both the book itself, but also the inspirational authors and illustrators who created them.

Even though only a small selection, the books cover a range of themes, such as friendship, acceptance, culture, heritage, mindfulness, and more deeper subjects like childhood isolation.
