10th Birthday Competition Winners

This year we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary here at Babipur.  We first opened our doors back in 2007 as a work from home business when our children were babies.  Still based in Snowdonia we’ve steadily grown and we now employ 15 people.  Our aim at Babipur remains the same as it always was, to introduce fair trade, sustainable and ethical products to our customers while offering great customer service. We have lots of plans for the future and we hope to have another successful 10 years ahead of us.

We know how much Babipurians (a slang for Babipur followers) love giveaways and competitions so we recently ran a competition asking you, our customers, to wish us a Happy Birthday. The entries completely blew us away!  We are extremely grateful to all who entered and made such an incredible effort.  What else can we say, you guys are simply awesome!  We put together this video to show off some of the entries we received.

Competition winners

We had to narrow down the entries to 10 winners which has been very difficult because there have been so many fantastic offerings.  We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to enter, there were lots and lots entries that we wanted so much to give a prize to but we had to choose the winners and here they are in no particular order, the prizes were chosen at random.

Beth  made this amazing birthday cake with nappies on a washing line and it also came with rainbow cupcakes and nappy cupcakes too. Hand delivered to Babipur towers (Pride carrier winner)

Paige made this crochet blanket for us, it’s huge! The time and care taken on this is astonishing (12 Grapat Nins winner)

Gemma crocheted this cushion with the Babipur logo and a rainbow on the back along with a picture that her son made for us (Plan Toys Bee Hives winner)

Charlotte made a wonderful picture which includes a wide range of Babipur’s favourite products enclosed inside a heart.  (Wobbel board winner)

Kayleigh made this animated video telling the story of Babipur which is pretty amazing (Grimm’s rainbows winner)

We keep saying it but we were completely overwhelmed by all the amazing entries, it was so so hard to choose the winners.  We were also sent home made cakes, biscuits, hand made elephant toys, drawings, cards, well wishes and lots and lots of creative, fun and beautiful pictures.

Grapat Nins – What is a Nin?

Grapat Nins® Wooden Peg Dolls

Nins at Babipur

Welcome to the world of the Grapat Nins®.  A beautiful collection of Waldorf style wooden peg dolls that children adore.  The Nins® come in a range of colours, styles and some are made using different types of wood.  They’re lovely and tactile and pleasing to hold in your hand.  These simplistic wooden pegs dolls have no expression, gender or clothing which allows children to imagine them to be whatever they like without the constraints put in place by many other toys available.  This makes Grapat Nins® a popular choice for parents looking for Waldorf and Montessori toys for their children. These are a Few of our Favourite (toy) Things

Toy Favourites at Babipur

A customer of ours asked a very good question in our Facebook group the other day.

“So… Babipur team, what’s the most underrated toy that you sell? The one that you think is really awesome but doesn’t seem as popular as some of the others!! I see rainbows and bee hives and holztiger being bought all the time, and I’m just after other suggestions that I might not have found on your website!”

We’ve been selling quality toys since 2007 and the choice we offer is now pretty incredible so it’s hard to pick out just a few but here goes.

Zero Waste Week 2016 at Babipur

zero waste

Every year for one week in September this grassroots campaign sets out to raise awareness of the negative effects that the amount of waste we produce each year has on our environment; it also reaches out to empower people to think about their waste production and reduce it.

Here at Babi Pur we are very conscious about the environment and we are always thinking about ways we can reduce our waste and yours!

Reducing waste at Babipur Towers

Here at Babipur we work hard to keep our waste production as low as possible, and one major way we do this is by recycling and re-using the packaging and boxes that come into our warehouse from our suppliers.  We don’t buy in any materials that are not recyclable, our packing tape is paper based, we re-use as many boxes as we can, any boxes we do buy in are made from recycled card and our small despatch bags are biodegradable.  This is important to us as we sell such a wide range of goodies of all shapes and sizes and this can produce a lot of packaging!

So instead of it all being thrown away and forgotten about we re-use it all to package up your lovely orders and send them off to arrive safely to you!

Our products help YOU to reduce waste

Not only are we conscious about our packaging but we put a lot of thought into our products, we only source ethically produced, fair trade goods made of natural and sustainable materials. This means the products we sell have a considered impact in the environment and many have a positive impact over their lifetime.

Reusable nappies are awesome

Here at Babi Pur we just love cloth nappies! Cloth nappies are fantastic, wash and re-use over and over again and drastically reduce your household waste.  Each day around 8 million disposable nappies are thrown away each day in the UK alone and they all go into landfill because disposable nappies are not recyclable or biodegrable.  In fact every single disposable nappy ever made hasn’t started to degrade yet which is a pretty gross thought.   Landfill and environmental damage isn’t the only problem either, disposable nappies require vasts resources to be produced, oil, water and other chemicals. Even if you only use one washable nappy per day it makes a difference so, if you haven’t already, give the a go!

Each brand has a wide range of beautiful prints and patterns, whether it’s the excellent themes with Tots Bots, the beautiful designs from Milovia, or our very own Babi Pur elephant designs on Close Pop Ins! Switching to cloth nappies is a great way to reduce the amount of harmful waste that is produced every year, it’ll also save you money in the long term and is kinder to your baby’s skin.

Why not check out our range of nappies? There’s so many to choose from, and for #ZeroWasteWeek while stocks last you’ll even get a free elephant bag when you buy one of our elephant Pop Ins!

Reusable menstrual products

Just like disposable nappies are bad for the environment, so too are tampons and disposable sanitary pads. But there is an alternative! CSP (cloth sanitary pads) and menstrual cups are a cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative to disposable products. Using CSP can greatly reduce the amount of waste that is produced as a result of using disposable sanitary products.

Not only that but they don’t contain any chemicals that are harmful to the environment and your own health.

Here at Babi Pur we have a great range pf csp, breast pads and menstrual cups and we stock everything you’ll need to make the transfer from disposable sanitary products to reusable, or expand your collection.

Making small changes in the products you use on a regular basis from disposable to reusable alternatives will make a great difference to your life, bank balance and the environment! Every little bit helps, you don’t have to dive in and use them fill time straight away.  Our advice would be to try a couple of brands and see which ones you like before buying enough for your period.

Klean Kanteen

Klean Kenteen is all about a more reusable and healthier lifestyle, check out their range of drinks bottles, coffee cups, food containers & more all made from quality stainless steel and available at Babipur.

Disposable coffee cups have recently been highlighted on a recent BBC programme by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall as being a major recycling problem; just imagine all of those cups with their plastic lids being thrown away after people finish their morning coffee on their way to work every day.  Did you know that paper disposable coffee cups are NOT recycled by most councils in the UK and so guess where they end up… yup, landfill.

That’s why we are proud to stock the Klean Kanteen range! These beauties are made of stainless steel and are perfectly insulated so your drinks will stay piping hot/ freezing cold for longer! These containers come in a range of colours and sizes and are perfect to take with you to work, picnics, festivals, beaches- anywhere! Bring your own cup to the coffee shop and some even offer a small discount too.

With these fantastic containers you’ll no longer have to worry about having to use those environmentally damaging disposable cups… or cold coffee for that matter! Klean Kanteen also make a wide range of water bottles, cups and containers, great for days out and helps reduce to reduce those purchases of plastic water and drinks bottles.  Loads of spares and replaceable parts are available so your Klean Kanteen will pretty much last a life time.

#ZeroWasteWeek

So whether you’re an eco warrior already or thinking about making some small changes to get started now is the time to do it. Head over to Babipur today and get involved in a more reusable, less wasteful lifestyle.

Babipur Toy Brands in a Nutshell

Ethical Toy Brands at Babipur

ethical toy brands

Christmas is swiftly approaching so I thought I’d take a minute to introduce the lovely brands we stock here at Babipur without too much waffle and cliches.  We have a huge selection of toys suitable from newborn up to 99 years, but around 6 years is a more sensible upper limit. In no particular order

Plan ToysPlan Toys

Plan Toys have been making “green” toys since… well, before “green” was fashionable.  Made in Thailand from exhausted rubber plantations in super eco factories. A modern and innovative company, Plan Toys make their own glue because they don’t want nasty stuff in it and they make some toys from a clever kind of MDF (but not MDF) using the roots of the rubber trees which would otherwise go to waste. Clever designs, bright colours and generally pretty fab all round. Here’s a few of our favourite Plan Toys toys, baby car rattle, duck racer, balancing tree and the tot drum.

Baby Car Rattle      Plan Toys Duck Racer  Plan Toys Balancing Tree      Plan Toys Tot Drum

Haba toys

Haba toys

Haba are best known for their German build quality, but don’t worry, there are no faked emissions tests here.  The Haba baby walkers are built like tanks and their range of wooden teething and grasping toys is phenomenal. “Quality” is the word that comes to my mind first when you mention the word Haba. Yes some of their marble run items and blocks are quite expensive but they will probably last until the turn of the next millennium and who else makes a marble catapult? The Haba dolls range is very popular, their size and lack of Barbie like features appeals to parents and children. Haba fabric toys are conscientiously made in China. Here’s a few Haba picks, Discovery wagon, Kringerling, Coliseum blocks and Lighthouse stacker

Haba Discovery Wagon      Haba Kringerling Clutch & Teething Toy  Haba Coliseum Building Blocks        Haba Lighthouse Stacking Game

Grimms toys Grimm’s

Grimm’s toys are quite simply stunning! Each one looks like a work of art and sometimes you’re not sure if they should just sit on the shelf as an ornament or if they should actually be played with.  Rest assured Grimm’s are definitely toys and they’re another wooden toy brand with a “Made in Germany” tag so they’re super robust. I’m pulling a quote from our Facebook hangout group to demonstrate the quality

“We have the large rainbow at the pre-school I work at, we’ve had it for about 7/8 years, it gets a daily battering from around 40 children in the setting and is still going strong! We love it.x”

The rainbow colours really make this range stand out from the crowd. Grimm’s are popular with the Steiner Waldorf education sector because they encourage children’s natural enthusiasm and wonder free from the pigeon holes that society often thrusts upon us. I believe that the majority of all the toys we sell at Babipur also encompass this ethos. Here’s a few of our picks, Large rainbow (of course),

Grimm's Rainbow Large (12 Pieces)        Grimm's Grasping Toy Rainbow BoatGrimm's Butterfly Puzzle        Grimm's Pull Along Blue Elephant

lanka-kade.fw Lanka Kade

Lanka Kade are one of the first brands we stocked here at Babipur back in 2007. Made in Sri Lanka by traditional artisans the hand made nature of these beautifully colourful toys really shines. The wooden jigsaws are extremely popular but the dolls made with handloom woven cotton are a real favourite of ours. All Lanka Kade toys are fair trade, made in Sri lanka, all wooden toys utilise exhausted rubber wood. Lanka Kade favourites including our Welsh language friend, Welsh Dragon, London bus, Penguin and baby and a doll.

Le Toy VanLe Toy Van

Le Toy Van, oooh la la it sounds so Francais, a British company with french connections, fabulous wooden toys made in Indonesia in an ethical way at every stage.  Noah’s arks, farms, pirate ships and a fantastic range of kitchen toys. Reasonable prices, great quality and simply great fun. Here’s a few faves, Budkin barn, Doctor’s set, Noah’s ark and Cafe machine.

Janod Janod

Janod are a big name in France and they make some unique wooden toys. Most famed for their magnetic rocket, Elton John has one don’t ya know. We’re always impressed with the designs and quality of Janod wooden toys. Janod make their toys in China conscientiously which makes their prices affordable but their designs are what stand out. We love the Janod Rocket and the Janod play garage.

DiscoveroO Discoveroo

DiscoveroO is an Australian company, hence the kangaroo logo, that creates a sweet range of wooden toys. Made in China using sustainable wood and finished to a high standard. Natural wood combined with neutral colours and designs that children love. smackeroO and builderoO ranges encourage smacking and building… or maybe more bashing and building, we don’t do smacking these days. Check out the bird smackeroO and the stacking windmill.

Franck FischerFranck & Fischer

Funky,  Danish, Organic and rather cool. Franck and Fischer toys are super trendy and super eco, although I’m not quite sure of the Danish are naturally super cool or they’re trying to be. Either way these toys look great and they’re made by small scale producers under fair trade conditions. Aaaand due to the nature of production stock can be tricky to get hold of so if you see something you like and it’s in stock grab it while you can. Franck and Fischer faves, Jeppe the tiger and the Norma the elephant
