Zero Waste Week 2016 at Babipur

zero waste

Every year for one week in September this grassroots campaign sets out to raise awareness of the negative effects that the amount of waste we produce each year has on our environment; it also reaches out to empower people to think about their waste production and reduce it.

Here at Babi Pur we are very conscious about the environment and we are always thinking about ways we can reduce our waste and yours!

Reducing waste at Babipur Towers

Here at Babipur we work hard to keep our waste production as low as possible, and one major way we do this is by recycling and re-using the packaging and boxes that come into our warehouse from our suppliers.  We don’t buy in any materials that are not recyclable, our packing tape is paper based, we re-use as many boxes as we can, any boxes we do buy in are made from recycled card and our small despatch bags are biodegradable.  This is important to us as we sell such a wide range of goodies of all shapes and sizes and this can produce a lot of packaging!

So instead of it all being thrown away and forgotten about we re-use it all to package up your lovely orders and send them off to arrive safely to you!

Our products help YOU to reduce waste

Not only are we conscious about our packaging but we put a lot of thought into our products, we only source ethically produced, fair trade goods made of natural and sustainable materials. This means the products we sell have a considered impact in the environment and many have a positive impact over their lifetime.

Reusable nappies are awesome

Here at Babi Pur we just love cloth nappies! Cloth nappies are fantastic, wash and re-use over and over again and drastically reduce your household waste.  Each day around 8 million disposable nappies are thrown away each day in the UK alone and they all go into landfill because disposable nappies are not recyclable or biodegrable.  In fact every single disposable nappy ever made hasn’t started to degrade yet which is a pretty gross thought.   Landfill and environmental damage isn’t the only problem either, disposable nappies require vasts resources to be produced, oil, water and other chemicals. Even if you only use one washable nappy per day it makes a difference so, if you haven’t already, give the a go!

Each brand has a wide range of beautiful prints and patterns, whether it’s the excellent themes with Tots Bots, the beautiful designs from Milovia, or our very own Babi Pur elephant designs on Close Pop Ins! Switching to cloth nappies is a great way to reduce the amount of harmful waste that is produced every year, it’ll also save you money in the long term and is kinder to your baby’s skin.

Why not check out our range of nappies? There’s so many to choose from, and for #ZeroWasteWeek while stocks last you’ll even get a free elephant bag when you buy one of our elephant Pop Ins!

Reusable menstrual products

Just like disposable nappies are bad for the environment, so too are tampons and disposable sanitary pads. But there is an alternative! CSP (cloth sanitary pads) and menstrual cups are a cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative to disposable products. Using CSP can greatly reduce the amount of waste that is produced as a result of using disposable sanitary products.

Not only that but they don’t contain any chemicals that are harmful to the environment and your own health.

Here at Babi Pur we have a great range pf csp, breast pads and menstrual cups and we stock everything you’ll need to make the transfer from disposable sanitary products to reusable, or expand your collection.

Making small changes in the products you use on a regular basis from disposable to reusable alternatives will make a great difference to your life, bank balance and the environment! Every little bit helps, you don’t have to dive in and use them fill time straight away.  Our advice would be to try a couple of brands and see which ones you like before buying enough for your period.

Klean Kanteen

Klean Kenteen is all about a more reusable and healthier lifestyle, check out their range of drinks bottles, coffee cups, food containers & more all made from quality stainless steel and available at Babipur.

Disposable coffee cups have recently been highlighted on a recent BBC programme by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall as being a major recycling problem; just imagine all of those cups with their plastic lids being thrown away after people finish their morning coffee on their way to work every day.  Did you know that paper disposable coffee cups are NOT recycled by most councils in the UK and so guess where they end up… yup, landfill.

That’s why we are proud to stock the Klean Kanteen range! These beauties are made of stainless steel and are perfectly insulated so your drinks will stay piping hot/ freezing cold for longer! These containers come in a range of colours and sizes and are perfect to take with you to work, picnics, festivals, beaches- anywhere! Bring your own cup to the coffee shop and some even offer a small discount too.

With these fantastic containers you’ll no longer have to worry about having to use those environmentally damaging disposable cups… or cold coffee for that matter! Klean Kanteen also make a wide range of water bottles, cups and containers, great for days out and helps reduce to reduce those purchases of plastic water and drinks bottles.  Loads of spares and replaceable parts are available so your Klean Kanteen will pretty much last a life time.

So whether you’re an eco warrior already or thinking about making some small changes to get started now is the time to do it. Head over to Babipur today and get involved in a more reusable, less wasteful lifestyle.

Green People Organic Sun Lotion

My youngest daughter and I both have blue eyes and fair skin that burns very easily in the sun.  According to the British Association of Dermatologists, People with a darker complexion have more natural sun protection, while fair-skinned individuals like ourselves are more susceptible to sun burn, skin cancer and photodamage.  I’ve actually had growths removed from the side of my face due to sun damage which was pretty scary!  No sun lotion can offer full protection so it is very important that we take other precautions such as wearing tight waved clothing, wide brimmed hats, sunglasses when out in the sun and try our best to keep out of the direct sunlight between the hours of Midday and 3pm.

We decided to stock the Green People range of Sun protection here at Babi Pur after using it ourselves on the whole family.  We did a lot of research into different types of sun protection and came to the conclusion that a natural and organic sun lotion was much better for our skin.

The Green People sun lotion is very easy to apply, it rubs in easily and you don’t look like a ghost when you have it on! Our whole family uses the Organic Children sun lotion as it works well for all of us, I can even get away with putting it on my face without breaking out in spots, which is what usually happens when I apply sun lotion to my face.

Is SPF 30 high enough?

This is a question we’re often asked by our customers here at Babi Pur.  It would be reasonable to assume that a Factor 50 offers nearly double the protection of a SPF25 or SPF30, however an SPF30 lotion offers 97% protection against UVB rays, while SPF50 offers just 1% more at 98%

Applying an SPF50 could actually give a false sense of security, Green People say that some people have a tendency to re-apply less often and stay in the sun longer when they use higher factors.  This can significantly increase your risk of sun damage because you need to reapply regularly to protect from UVA damage no matter what factor you use.

What about UVA Rays?

It is the UVA rays that cause long term damage in the deep layers of your skin.  The SPF factor refers to the UVB rays and not the UVA.  To protect your skin from the UVA rays it is very important that you wear enough sun lotion and re-apply often.   Look out for broad spectrum sun lotions that carry the UVA seal, this is a logo with ‘UVA’ inside a circle which indicates that a sun cream meets the EU recommendation and offers UVA protection factor equivalent to at least a third of their SPF.   Some broad spectrum sun lotions display the Boots star rating instead of the UVA seal.

UV rays will reflect from sand, water and snow and can damage your skin even when you are in the shade.  Also, it is worth remembering that UVA rays are present all year round, and 80% of UVA light can penetrate through thin layers of cloud.

Why Green People natural sun lotions?

Green people sun lotions contain a blend of minerals, the mountain flower Edelweiss and a filter derived from Cinnamon which is very effective and provides broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.  Green People organic skincare choose only the gentle filters to help protect yours and your children’s skin from sun damage.  Their range of sun lotions are therefore suitable for people with very sensitive skin and allergies.  They protect your skin without blocking pores (which is excellent for my skin type) and it allows your skin to breathe and won’t cause irritation.  It is even suitable for those who suffer prickly heat.  Also, Green People sun lotions were submitted for independent testing which confirmed that their lotions were offering high protection against both UVA and UVB rays.  According to Which, not all sun lotions do what they say on the tube.  Five sun creams have failed their SPF testing and Which recommend you stay clear of them. They are: Boots Soltan Protect & Moisturise Lotion SPF30 (200ml); Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Lotion SPF30 (180ml); Hawaiian Topic Satin Protection Ultra Radiance Sun Lotion SPF30 (200ml); Piz Buin Ultra Light Dry Tough Sun Fluid SPF30 (150ml); Malibu Protective Lotion SPF30 (200ml).

Growing up in a lovely and warm Latin American country I used to love going on holidays to the small village were my father was born. Contrary to the big city where we lived, the luxury of a washing machine didn’t exist. I was fascinated watching the ladies washing their clothes with a bar of coconut soap in the river, I used to pay attention on how they used to scrub harder on stains and ‘beat’ the clothes on the rocks to make them cleaner and chatted and sang together, it was almost mystical.

Now days we tend to wash our clothes in the comfort of our own homes, which is great, however with that we miss out on the wisdom of each other’s washing routines, with so many choices, what washing products to use?

I came to live in the UK in my late teens and had to wash my own clothes for the 1st time, back then any old soap would do really!

Then I had a baby..

  • With sensitive skin
  • Eczema prone skin
  • With food ‘allergies’

Washing clothes became a little more complex Continue reading

Tula Baby Carrier Review

tried and tested tula.fw

This week Cecilia reviews the  Tula baby carrier.. read Cecilia’s review below….

When pregnant with baby number 3 I had a lovely lady who runs a sling library showed me a few types of slings.  I fell in love with a stretchy wrap and a few woven wraps.  However I politely declined any Information on buckle carriers as I thought I was a ‘wrap sort of girl’.
Fast forward a few months, baby was here and growing, when the time came to retire the stretchy wrap, I found it was a little time consuming to wrap with a woven then completely unwrap to feed
Then wrap up again
Then unwrap for a nappy change
Then wrap up again
Having another 2 very active children to run after I decided I needed something more practical in addition to the woven wraps, that is when the idea of a buckle carrier came to my mind.  I asked a few friends to try on their few different types of buckle carriers and the Tula stood out by a long way for its comfort and practicality.

Very easy to put on, the Tula has two buckles to be fastened and that’s it, one shoulder buckle and one waist one, no complicated crossing over straps to manoeuvre from one side to the other, it really is straightforward.

The thick padding is lush, it has fully padded waist straps as well as fully padded shoulder straps making the Tula super comfortable on your back and shoulders.

Baby feels almost weightless I feel like I am carrying a little feather around not a baby, yet Isla feels very close and secure.

It is hand made from 100% cotton, Isla has sensitive skin especially on her neck and face so material is important.

It is comfortable under my arms, I can either use it very snuggly under the arm or I can adjust the straps so that it doesn’t dig on my breasts when they are full (of milk).
