Fairtrade Fortnight 2022: Choose The World You Want
What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade tackles the injustices of conventional trade and gives farmers and workers in the developing world better prices, decent working conditions and promotes sustainable farming practices. With simple shopping choices you have the power to change the world everyday. Choose from a wide range of Fairtrade certified products, from chocolate, tea and coffee, bananas, cotton and gold.
Fairtrade empowers farmers and workers to improve their living standards, welfare of their community and our shared environment. But beyond certification, fair prices support communities with additional training to become more resilient to crisis including COVID-19 and tackling climate change.
Through Fairtrade certification companies have pay farmers and workers sustainable prices – these must never fall lower than the market price. Conventional trade traditionally discriminates against the most vulnerable. However, by choosing Fairtrade it enables farmers to get a better deal, improve their position and have more control over their lives. It enables farmers to make their own decisions, control their own future and lead the dignified life everyone deserves.
Fairtrade Fortnight 2022
A two week campaign to raise awareness of the importance of Fairtrade, Fairtrade Fortnight happens every year at the end of February and early March. Across the UK and around the world thousands of people come together to share stories of the people who grow our food and drink and grow the cotton for our clothing. From individuals, companies, schools and groups Fairtrade Fortnight 2022 aims to highlight exploitation within the everyday products within our homes.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us more than ever how interconnected we are globally. This interconnection is at the very heart of the Fairtrade message and is where your role begins. You are part of the Fairtrade movement, and you have the power to drive long-term change, not only with your shopping choices but with your support in spreading the message.
Fairtrade Foundation
Last autumns COP26 failed to deliver the progress needed to support farmers to build climate resilience into their production. Governments around the world are dragging their feet, when we need them to get serious about climate action. Fairtrade Fortnight 2022 is an opportunity to amplify the voices of Fairtrade producers on the frontline of the climate crisis.
With the ongoing difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the traditional campaigning methods to raise awareness have been shelved. It’s more important than ever before to spread the message about Fairtrade across social media.
Choose The World You Want
This years Fairtrade Fortnight 2022 message is Choose The World You Want. This highlights the growing challenges that climate change brings to farmers and workers in the communities Fairtrade works with. The evidence is starkly clear. Climate change disproportionately affects farmers in the global south, in areas where incomes are restricted, and in countries which have contributed least to the climate crisis.
Climate change is making it harder for farmers to grow their crops. As normal weather patterns are disrupted, yields fall, crop diseases become more prevalent, and valuable top soil is eroded. The supply chain for many of our everyday commodities such as tea and coffee and chocolate will become disrupted. Once suitable land for crops will become inhospitable. What will this mean for the millions of people reliant on these crops for their livelihoods?
The Fairtrade movement has three big roles to play:
- ADVOCACY: Giving farmers and workers in the global south a voice. The UK has yet to feel the full force of climate change, but it’s already having terrible consequences overseas.
- ADAPTION: By making sure farmers have the resources to survive and mitigate the impact of climate change where it’s already having an affect. The Fairtrade Foundation producer network offers support and training to farmers to adapt to build climate change resilience. The Fairtrade Minimum Price and Premium’s offer farmers and workers the ability to invest in environmentally sustainable techniques.
- AVOIDING EMISSIONS: Fairtrade standards require action on lowering emissions wherever possible, taking direct action to stop climate change.
The Fairtrade Foundation believe there won’t be a fair deal for the planet while exploiting farmers and workers in developing countries – the area hardest hit by climate change.
Fairtrade at Babipur
Here at Babipur we have been huge supporters of Fairtrade Fortnight for many years. We stock and buy fairly traded products including Fairtrade clothing, chocolate, and more recently tea and coffee. Before starting Babipur, Jolene and Peter campaigned against exploitation and slavery and promoted fair trade. Doing voluntary work with the Fairtrade Foundation, they helped make Wales the first Fairtrade Nation in the world.
What can you do to help?
The best thing is to help us spread the word about the importance of Fairtrade. Getting the message out there to corporations that we want the people who supply our food, fabrics and flowers to be treated fairly, equitably and able to live a dignified life that meets their basic human rights.
Get involved with us here at Babipur in spreading the word all about Fairtrade and what it means to the farming communities at the climate change front line. This Fairtrade Fortnight 2022, the Fairtrade Foundation is asking you to ‘Choose the World You Want’. Use your voice to tell others about the challenges that farmers face from climate change.
Supporting Fairtrade through conscious purchasing choices helps drive positive change at the consumer level. With Easter just around the corner, it’s an ideal time to show support by choosing a Fairtrade Easter egg or ethical Easter gifts.
