Angela's FuzziBunz review

A lovely surprise arrived from Babi Pur - a new Fuzzi Bunz One size Elite nappy in Tootie Frootie to test. On opening the parcel I was a little surprised at the size of the nappy – it looked very small. The nappy is suitable from 8-35lbs and I did wonder if it would fit my 23lb one year old.

The Fuzzi Bunz Elite has a very clever elastic adjustment system a bit like the elastic waist adjusters in children’s trousers, so following the instruction I adjusted the nappy to the correct size (and to be honest still thought it would not fit) chased Benjamin around they front room and eventually got the nappy on him. It is an AMAZING FIT. Much slimmer than his Bumgenius Birth to Potty V3 and his Flips. It fits beautifully under slim normal trousers. The elastic give much more flexibility of adjustment than traditional snaps on the rise of the nappy. The smallest setting looks suitable for newborn, being a similar size to my BG newborn nappy and I still have plenty of adjustment to allow for Benjamin’s growth.

Most of my nappies are pockets with microfiber inserts so I was intrigued with the minky inserts. They are very good, have great absorbency lasted 3-4 hours washed well, no staining and dried even quicker than the microfiber inserts. The only slight problem I had was stuffing the nappy – there is a knack to it. The gusset of the nappy is narrower than most pockets but about 2cms and it was a little tight stuffing in the inserts. I could fit in both inserts and a cotton booster. I don’t use night nappies but I don’t think this would be suitable for night use by any child other than newborn.

Benjamin was ill during the trail and had some horrible nappies as he was on antibiotics. The Fuzzi Bunz coped with everything really well, no leaks and no staining when washed.

This nappy has become my new favourite nappy. It has been admired by several friends who use cloth nappies. Am really tempted to get the Mac cheese one for some strange reason yellow appeals to me. Everyone should give them a try – as good as Bumgenius but a slimmer and I think more adjustable.

Claire A's FuzziBunz Review

We were sent one of these nappies by the kind people at Babi pur to test. We received the nappy a few days ago, and so far it’s been on my little one twice. This nappy is a Birth to potty nappy, and comes with a shell, two minky inserts and spare elastic. The nappy is adjusted by moving the elastic inside the nappy onto different buttonholes (these are marked with numbers).

When I first received this nappy I was a bit put off, it looks rather small in comparison to some of my other nappies and I was concerned that it wouldn’t fit my little one. But I dutifully set the nappy to the appropriate sizing on the elastic. I found this rather easy and the instructions were fairly simple to follow.

Washing, washing wise this nappy is fantastic. Once off the baby you pull out the inserts and stick it in the machine (obviously after being in a bucket or wet bag) and wash in the normal way in which you wash your nappies. For those with limited drying space, this nappy is a Godsend. Seriously, the inserts came out of my machine almost dry. In fact the shell took longer than the inserts. If you want a quick drying nappy then this is it!

Performance, now the vast majority of my nappies have microfibre inserts, and, for my baby these work fine most of the time. I’d say that this nappy performs as well as the next nappy. I had it on my little one twice for about two to three hours both times and it was fine. This is about the average for a cloth nappy.

Wear, now I said earlier that I was concerned about the rise on this nappy. I needn’t have worried. This nappy fit my little one brilliantly; we’re currently using the vast majority of our nappies on the second to last snap setting (our totsbots are on the last). The rise isn’t as generous as a bumgenius, but to be honest I didn’t find that a problem. These nappies seem to fit like an itti bitti, in that they’re very trim and seem to function on a ‘low rider’ philosophy.

The feel of this nappy is very nice, the minky inserts are lovely to handle and don’t catch on my skin as microfibre tends to do. The outer of the nappy is lovely and soft and the fleece inner is just as nice. It doesn’t seem to as finely milled as other nappies I’ve come across, and I would be concerned about bobbling. But this is something that I’m sure will be tested in time.

In conclusion, this is a fabulous nappy that I’ve been very impressed with. I’ve tried pretty much tried everything under the sun and I would happily get more of these nappies. The fit is fabulous and it performs well (on both areas of containment, my little one really put it through its paces). The choice of colours is lush and there is something to please every palette. When some or my current stash comes up for replacement, I’ll be getting some more of these.

Claire H's FuzziBunz Review

I was really pleased to be asked to review The Fuzzibunz Elite for Babi Pur. We don’t have a Fuzzi in our collection and the style of adjustment makes this a new type of nappy for us.

The Fuzzibunz Elite has a lovely bright PUL outer, fleece lining and the most gorgeous, soft, minkie inserts. At first, I thought adjusting the elastic was a bit fiddly, and the numbering system very slightly confusing (how the leg holes are numbered is different to how the waist holes are numbered), but once you’ve got it right, it does provide a really, really, good fit. In terms of how it works, I would say I definitely prefer this method of changing the size of your nappy over any other BtP adjustments. You get more size choices, a better fit and I also liked not having the poppers across the front which you get on most other BtP nappies; it looks so much nicer (like a sized nappy).

What I really did notice with this nappy, is how slim it is between the legs, a good inch or two narrower than some other pockets. This does have one small disadvantage; I found putting the inserts into the pocket a little tricky. The width of the nappy is exactly the same width of the insert, so I found it a bit of a fiddle to make sure the insert wasn’t bunching up/folding over. This was even trickier when I was trying to put both inserts in – I found you simply have to try and put them in at the same time as it’s nearly impossible to but the booster in after you’ve put the main insert in. This is definitely one of those nappies where you have to put it all together before a nappy change rather than doing it all on the go. I did find that when using just the main insert we had some wicking after an hour or so, but when I used both inserts it works really well, we haven’t had one leak. What’s more, I found that the fleece liner felt pretty dry after use, so something is good at keeping any liquid away from the skin.

One huge bonus of this nappy is the drying time. It says you can tumble dry them on a low heat, but they feel halfway dry when coming out of the washer, that I simply pop them on an airer (no heating on yet!) and they really are dry in a few hours. I reckon with a little bit of heat (airing cupboard/nice day on the washing line) you could wash this nappy in the morning and be wearing it again in the afternoon. The blurb says that these are stain and odour resistant too, so that’s always a bonus.

Pros – Lots of adjustment options so you can ensure it fits lovely – and it does fit lovely when it’s on. Washes well, really quick drying.

Cons – Adjusting size and putting inserts can take a bit of getting used to.

"The postman knocked on our door and I couldn't understand why Mummy got so excited to see him. It's not like it was Daddy, or anyone like that.

Turned out she was so excited to see him because he'd bought her my new BumGenius 4.0. Personally I quite liked my V3s, couldn't see the fuss over this new version. I became determined to out-poo it. That'd show her. I ate a whole box of raisens as the nappy dried on the line in preparation.

When Mummy put the nappy on me I was cross. It was really really comfy and felt nice against my bum, but I was cross because these new poppers meant that I could no longer perform my 'nappy magic' trick (taking it off and hiding it in the best place I could before Mummy noticed I wasn't wearing a nappy anymore). These snaps wouldn't budge!

I became even more determined to out-poo it.

I decided to fall asleep without warning. This would throw Mummy as she didn't have a chance to change my nappy before nap time. I slept for 2 hours. I knew that would worry Mummy as we'd had leaks before this way. I was very annoyed to wake up to find the V4 had not leaked one single bit.

I decided to out-poo it there and then.

Mummy came in just as I was putting my plan into action. Good, I thought, now she'll see that these things are rubbish and put me back in my old V3 with applix. I pooed like I've never pooed before.

The damn thing contained it!! All of it!! Not one little leak!

So now I'm stuck in these things. Mummy is insistant. Some you win, some you lose. I've decided to accept this because there's no point in fighting it anymore. Plus did I mention how super dooper comfortable they are on my baby bum?

I might not be able to remove my own nappy anymore, thus I am no longer able to hide my nappy in obscure locations for Mummy to find. I've come to accept this, too. I've found something much better to hide instead. Mummy's car keys!!'

I love, love, love this nappy!

The nappy comes in four lovely pastel colours and white. I just have to complete my collection with Duck Egg and Coconut.

The absorbency of this nappy makes it ideal for a night time nappy. I called Jolene from Babi Pur for advice on which nappies to try and she suggested we try the Close Parent Pop in bamboo nappy. Bamboo is really absorbent, this shows in the length of drying dry it needs. This is the only reuable I've tried that needs two days drying time but for me that just highlights how absorbent it is. The nappy has a double gusset and so far in about two months we've not had any leakages!

It's worth having at least two of the nappies to allow for the drying time and so you don't have to do a daily wash but they are priced very reasonably.

We also have the Pop In Tote bags in size small and medium. The small size is perfect to be sent with Fizz to nursery or being out and about for a day as it can fit a days worth of nappies. The medium is perfect for at home. It hangs in the toilet and fits around two days worth of nappies. They are also colourful and stripey meaning your bag will always stand out compared to the plain totes normally used with reusables. They keep any smells in the bag so no need to worry about using any oils to dilute the smell of dirty nappies.

The Pop In liners are really good too. Our first set of liners were a non branded liner. The Pop In Liner was thinner fitting into the nappy and not spilling out of the gusset (we had found this with another liner and it created leakage gaps).

I have to say I have become a big fan of the Pop In and I have hoping to complete my collection of colours soon!

Caring for your bumGenius Organic AIO

The organic cotton in the bumGenuis Organic nappy requires at least 5+ prewashes before they reach a decent level of absorbency. This can easily be achieved by using the nappy for 'short wears' then your not repeatedly washing clean nappies.

Dry pail the nappy after use and wash between 40-60 with 1/4 of the normal dosage of detergent. Do not use fabric softener it will affect the nappies absorbency.

This nappy can be tumble dried on low, or line dried.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Really absorbent
Great fit
Easy to use

Cons

Can take a while before full absorbency is reached

Tots Bots Easyfit v2

The Tots Bots Easyfit v2 is a birth-potty or one size, all in one nappy designed to fit babies from 10-35lbs. It has a pull out bamboo core backed with microfibre which aids fast drying. It also allows access to the rear pocket allowing you to add extra inserts to boost absorbency.

The fab new designs really make a statement! The smooth cover and slim fit of the nappy and the new style stretchy bamboo make a fab nappy!

Pros & Cons

Pros

Birth to potty or one size nappy so only need to buy once
Great Prints
Super Absorbent

Cons

Aplix fastening only

Tots Bots Teenyfit

The new Tots Bots Teenyfit is specifically designed to fit newborn babies from 5-12lbs. Based on the new Easyfit v2 the Teenyfit is a sized nappy, allowing a snug fit on a newborn. An extra insert is included with the Teenyfit to help with absorbency and fit. They're also in the same great designs.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Designed to fit small babies
Super absorbent
Great prints

Cons

Limited wear - though you should get at least 4 months use
Aplix fastening only

Why buy the Teenyfit?

This video compares both the Teenyfit & Easyfit to allow you to compare the difference in the fit between the two nappies. As the Teenyfit is specifically designed to meet the needs of smaller babies your less likely to get pooplosions or leaks with a sized nappy than a birth to potty nappy.

Washing your Totsbots Nappies

Both the Easyfit and the Teenyfit nappies have a bamboo core which is a natural material and benefits from several pre-washes before it reaches optimum absorbency. So a wash and limited time wear will allow you to build up several washes before using for and extended period (ie overnight), doing a short wear also means you are not repeatedly washing clean nappies.

Wash between 40-60 degrees using a non-bio detergent and do not use fabric softener.

Tumble dry on low or line dry.

Check out Mama McCanns Review of the Easyfit v2 here

Buy the Easyfit v2 or the Teenyfit Here

The bumGenius Flip is a 'One-Size' 'Hybrid' nappy system.

As a 'one' sized system the nappy wraps are adjustable as your baby grows. The hybrid element of the system is the variety of different insert options that can be used.

The Demonstration videos have been split into four; allowing you to quickly access the part that interests you.

The Flip Wrap

The Flip wrap can be used with flip inserts or as a wrap for a fitted nappy. It is adjustable it fit babies from birth through to potty training. The popper fastening makes for a hard wearing a long lasting cover, velcro has a lifespan and starts to loose strength especially with repeated washing and wearing that you get with washable nappies. There are plenty of stretchy elasticated bits around the leg gusset and the back for a nice trim and tidy fit on your baby. The idea is you re-use the outer wrap and replace the inserts after each use. You will need to change the wrap once or twice each day more if the wrap gets soiled.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Birth to potty or One size Wrap so you don't need to buy different sizes
Can be used for Fitteds & Prefolds

Cons

Fit might not be so good on smaller babies
Come in popper fastening only

The Organic Insert

The Organic insert is a natural, high absorbency, 100% Oeko-Tex certified natural organic cotton. It is a tri-fold insert which can be left unfolded to enable faster drying. The large square pad of organic cotton fabric measuring roughly 38cm (15 in) square (expect shrinkage when washing). The material has two stitched lines running in two directions dividing the nappy into 9 squares, you fold the fabric in thirds along these lines to make to make a rectangle and place the fabric inside the flip cover. This is a great choice for people wanting natural fibres next to their babies skin while still being able to use the versatility of the flip nappy.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Super Absorbent
Organic & Natural fibres

Cons

Requires several pre-washes to develop absorbency
Can look bulky
Can take a while to dry

The Stay Dry Insert

The Stay dry insert is a 'No Fuss', simple soaker pad ideal for the changing bag, super absorbent and quick drying! The stay dry layer on the top of the insert locks wetness away from your babies skin. There are two stitched lines at one end where you fold the material to fit different size babies, this gives you 3 size options and words are stitched into the material, small, medium and large. . .simple really. The flip stay dry insert is a popular choice for normal daytime use.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Easy to use
Slim fitting
Stay dry ability keeps moisture from babies skin
Quick drying

Cons

Not as absorbent

The Disposable Insert

The convenience factor of being able to use an Eco-disposable soaker pad means if your away or out for the day you can still use your flips and dispose of the pad after use.

This is the only disposable nappy to achieve Oeko-Tex certification which means it has been independently tested for harmful substances and has been found to pose no risk to health whatsoever. The flip disposable insert is incredibly soft, it doesn't feel like a disposable nappy at all and that's probably down to the bamboo viscose outer material.

The flip disposable can be composted or put with your green garden to be recycled, check with your council recycling department. The flip disposable insert is made from the following natural materials; 5g of non-woven bamboo viscose, 14-15g of wood pulp (this is the absorbent part), 3g of SAP and 1g of starch based glue. All this is natural material that biodegrades but from what we've heard the european certification is likely to state the disposable insert is up to 97% biodegradable due to the starch based glue. Still the best disposable nappy option by a million miles on our opinion.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Fab for holidays & days out
Provide convenience

Cons

Doesn't prevent landfill
Still small amount of chemicals against baby's skin

Washing the Flip

When buying any nappy we always recommend washing at least once before using. The Organic Insert is a natural material and benefits from several pre-washes before it reaches optimum absorbency. So a wash and limited time wear will allow you to build up several washes before using for and extended period (ie overnight), doing a short wear also means you are not repeatedly washing clean nappies.

The Flip wrap and Inserts (with the exception of the disposable insert) can be stored in a dry pail until ready for washing. The max. recommended wash temperature is 60. The Wrap should be air dried but the inserts can be tumble dried on low.

We welcome the Ecobubs - a recent addition to the Babipur cloth nappy collection!
The nappy demonstration video above is filmed using a medium sized Ecobub.

The Ecobubs is a sized, side snap, pocket nappy. It comes in three sizes and a range of lovely stripy designs.

Small 3.5 - 7Kg (7 - 15lbs) Rise 34cm
Medium 5 - 12Kg (11 - 26lbs) Rise 46cm
Large 11Kg + (24lbs +) Rise 50cm

This nappy comes with it's own fast drying micro-fibre insert (two are required for overnight) which is placed into the "pocket" in-between the Wool/PUL and the micro fleece layer.

The wool outer is breathable and really soft and there's a thin layer of pul to keep the moisture in, the insert is made of microfibre and unfolds to allow quick and easy drying. The wool mix is very breathable and is great for regulating your baby's temperature - keeps baby warm in the winter and cool in the summer!

Caring for the Ecobub

It is surprisingly easy to care for this nappy, there is no need to lanolize the the wool - in fact the nappy just goes into the washing machine and can even be tumble dried!

I found it dries in as little as 30 minutes (outside in the sunshine) which means you get a very fast turnaround of nappies and don't need to buy as many.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Really fast drying (meaning you need fewer nappies)
Great fit for each size as your baby grows
Easy to use
Great for night-time
Great resale value

Cons

Need to buy the next size up as your baby grows

It's a really easy to use nappy. You basically wash, dry, stuff and go! Buy Ecobubs

Flip Outer Cover - First of all the wrap or cover of the flip nappy looks remarkably like the bumGenius organic cover. A one size outer shell with sizing poppers on the front and a popper fastening system as opposed to velcro. You will need to change the wrap once or twice each day we would guess.

Flip Stay Dry Insert - A rectangular multilayer piece of absorbent microfibre material which you place inside the cover to absorb all the wee wee. There are two stitched lines at one end where you fold the material to fit different size babies, this gives you 3 size options and words are stitched into the material, small, medium and large. . . simple really. The only other noticeable difference from previous bumGenius absorbent pads is a top fleece layer which is non absorbent and designed to keepbabies bottom dry. We expect this flip stay dry insert to be the most popular choice for normal use, being microfibre it will be very fast drying and from experience of past bumGenius microfibre nappies it will be very absorbent as well.

Flip Organic Cotton Insert - A large square pad of organic cotton fabric measuring roughly 38cm (15 in) square. The material has two stitched lines running in two directions dividing the nappy into 9 squares, you fold the fabric in thirds along these lines to make to make a rectangle and place the fabric inside the flip cover. We expect this to be very fast drying for a cotton nappy because the cotton fabric folds out so big allowing it to air. This looks set to be a great choice for people wanting natural fibres next to their babies skin while still being able to use the versatility of the flip nappy. . .

Versatility is what this nappy is all about and this next bit is what everyone is talking about.

Flip Disposable insert

The only disposable nappy to achieve Oeko-Tex certification which means it has been independently tested for harmful substances and has been found to pose no risk to health whatsoever. Can pampers say the same? The Flip Disposable insert is a rectangular piece of material which appears to have a thicker centre with a thin piece of fabric around each edge. The first thing that we noticed about the flip disposable insert is how incredibly soft it is, it doesn't feel like a disposable nappy at all and that's probably down to the bamboo viscose outer material. The next thing you notice is how thin the disposable insert is, bumGenius recommend using a smaller size on the outer wrap when using it for this reason. Using the same flip nappy cover you place the flip disposable insert inside and when used you throw it away.

So what do we think? - When we heard about the bumGenius Flip nappy it sounded like a real innovation and because it's designed by those clever people over in the states, bumGenius, we knew it would be well made. Having a good inspection of the nappy confirms how good this nappy really is. In a way it's back to the basics of nappy design, a two part system, a separate wrap or cover with the absorbent nappy placed inside. The flip is a two part nappy combined with everything that's been learnt about one-size birth to potty nappies and with the added versatility offered by the flip disposable insert.
