A Moving Story

Once upon I time I wrote a post about putting our house on the market.......

Well, it sold in a week! But, its taken months and months for everything to go through with all sorts of legal hang ups, dodgy surveys etc. But I'm pleased to announce that on Tuesday we finally exchanged contracts - woop!

These past couple of weeks have been spent packing, and I've found it really really emotional. I've been in my little home for 10 happy years, and I've loved it all that time (and still do sob!). I have so manylovely memories connected to that house, including giving birth to little Nw right in the living room.

Packing the boys things has been the hardest part. They've been such happy chappies and you can't help worry that they won't settle in the new house, or that taking them away from their friends to a new village could be damaging. But I hope lot of love and cuddles will see us through.

And I'm trying to cheer myself up with nice thoughts about the future.  In our new house  the boys will have a bedroom each and a huge garden with lots of native trees to play about in. So everytime I shed a tear about what we'll be leaving, I try and think about something we'll be gaining -treehouses and dens are top of the list!

In the meantime, we have a month sleeping on friends floors, in caravans and holiday cottages while we wait to move in to the new place - a complete nightmare, but i've just got to keep thinking treehouses and dens, treehouses and dens! While we have no home we'll have very little internet access so I hope you'll forgive me if you don't here from me in a few weeks.  Until then...xxxxxxxx

A Cloth Odyssey – Tots Bots Easyfits V2 Review

In CategoryCloth Nappy Reviews, How Green is your Mammy
ByCat

I’d had my eye on the Tots Bots Easyfit V2 Starburst for some time, and I was chuffed to bits when one landed on my doorstep. Next to BG’s, the Totsbots Easyfits were the nappies I’d heard people rave about most, and I was keen to give them a whirl.

Initially though, I was a little disappointed. I don’t know why, but I didn’t like the pattern as much as I thought I would, and during the pre-washing process I found that they were really slow to dry, which would mean that if you only had V2 Easyfits, you’d need an awful lot of them. I also had mixed feelings about the bamboo being close to bubs’ skin. On the one hand, its a natural fabric which is great, but it also holds moisture next to the skin meaning that baby feel the wet and wants changing more frequently (not sure if this is a good or bad thing really).

But I’ve now been using this nappy for 6 months and it has moved dramatically up my list of favourites. This nappy is as solid as they come, and looks as good now as it did the day I got it, even though its been in continuous use. In fact, compared to my BG’s, which are looking very work worn, the Tots Bots look absolutely pristine, and the aplix is as good as new (which starting to become a bit of an issue with the BG's). Its easy to use, stays on, and hasn’t leaked once in all the time I've had it.

So here are the pro’s and con’s of the Easyfit V2 as I see them:

Pro’s
1. Bright funky pattern
2. Easy to use.
3. Wears well, will last a whole litter of children in my opinion.
4. Super strong velcro that will last forever.
5. Easy to adjust.
6. Made in the UK, so minimal mileage.
7. Bamboo next to skin, natural and means baby feels the wet.
8. Bomb proof!

Cons
1. Slow drying, would need a big stash.
2. Bamboo next to skin means baby feels the wet (a fleece liner would help with this if have an issue with nappy rash).

Here's how much Nw loves them!

The Easyfit V2 are on clearance at Babi Pur at the mo, so grab yourself a bargain!

Why is such a fab nappy on clearance?  Because the V3 is out - and I can't wait to try it.   The only issues I really had with this nappy was to do with the bamboo insert, and apparently this has been replaced by lovely, soft and fast drying minki insert instead, and the new patterns are super cute!   The Easyfit V3 could end up being my dream nappy, but then I say that about all the nappies Babi Pur sell.  Darn you Babi Pur, why do you have to sell such wonderful fluff!

P.S. Remember, you have until Weds 25th to enter the fab stash competition, so add a review to the Babi Pur site today to try all these beauties!xxxx

A Cloth Odyssey – Itti Bitti Tutto

In CategoryCloth Nappy Reviews, How Green is your Mammy
ByCat

Woo hoo! So its real nappy week, and a about time I shared a few more of my nappy experiences with you.

You may remember, some time ago, I started telling you about my cloth odyssey - the long journey into the world of cloth I've taken since the birth of my first son DW. So far I’ve told you about my terry seperates, flips, and Bumgenious v4’s. Now its time to share my thoughts on a new favourite ...................

Itti Bitty Tuttos!

When this nappy arrived I fell in love. In bright purple minky fabric it was soft and silky and just downright adorable.

Having had a problem with leaky minky in the past, I pre-washed it loads of times then put it to the test, and what a test it turned out to be! It was one of those hectic days where you have a hundred and one places to be, never having time to stop for a change and time flies by.  Then I realised it had been over 5 hours since I'd put the Tutto on, and little Nw was still happy as larry with no leaks.  Amazing!

I’ve continued to love this nappy. I love the way it feels, the way it fits and the way it just keeps everything in. The only thing I don’t love is the complicated popper system which looks impossible when you first get going, but its not that bad really and the Babipur instruction video really helps. The only other problem I've experienced is that it seems to have shrunk a little when I accidentally stuck it in the dryer on hot.  Ooops!

But I love love love this nappy, and if I had the funds  I think I would be tempted to buy many many more.

Here are the pro’s and cons though:

Pro’s
1. Soft and lovely minky.
2. Great colours.
3. Great flexible fastening.
4. Leak proof.
5. Just to repeat in case I havent said it enough, lovely and soft!

Cons
1. Complicated fastner system.
2. Shrinks if you do something stupid like put it in the dryer on hot :(
3. A bit pricy compared to other nappies.

Do you own a Tutto?  What do you think?  Remember to leave your review on the Babi Pur site to be in with a chance of winning a dream stash.

Happy RNW!!!!

P.S. Do you like Nw's new trick?  Standing with no hands.  Not long till he'll be walking methinks, time for everything to move up another level! :)

Baby Led Weaning – my way!

In CategoryFeatured Articles & News, How Green is your Mammy
ByCat

Now don’t get me wrong, I love my children very very much. But there are times when little baby Nw reaches out his pudgy little hands for me, smiling his cute toothy smile, and I really don’t want to pick him up.

Why?

Because he looks like this!

And why is he such a mess? Because I've chosen to wean him the baby led way, and, as much as I love this way of doing things it is darn messy.

There’s been a lot about baby led weaning in the press recently, and having raised two children this way I thought I’d add my thoughts to the discussion. People often have differing ideas about what baby led weaning involves, so here’s how I see it.

1. It’s not about ‘when should I wean’, but rather, 'are they ready ready to wean’?
People often get caught up in when they should wean their child, and whether you wean at 3, 4 or 6 months has become quite a hot topic in the mother and baby groups I go to. But the way I see it, nothing magical happens on the eve of your baby’s 6 month birthday that suddenly means he needs solids.

Babies will naturally, as they start understanding the world, start paying an interest in mealtimes and what you are eating. Just because they are watching you doesn’t necessarily mean that they need food, they’re just learning. But, say that your baby is sitting unsupported on your lap and and he’s developed enough co-ordination to swipe food off your plate and take it to his mouth, as long as you are eating something healthy why not let him have a taste. He’s showing you that he is interested. This may happen at 5 months or 8 months, either way its looking out for the pointers and following their lead that’s important. Being able to sit unsupported is an absolute must though, otherwise eating could present a choking hazzard.

2. Its not about finger foods versus spoons.
This is one which throws a lot of people and one of the most common questions I get asked is ‘How do you give him soup, porridge, yoghurt etc’. To me baby led weaning isn’t about saying spoons are wrong, it’s about not using a spoon to force a baby to eat when he doesn’t want to. If I’m eating something sloppy, I usually pre-load the spoon and give it to Nw to play with. Sometimes it ends up in his mouth, othertimes not, but as long as you remember the next point it’s ok either way!

3. Food for fun until they are one
I think that to get your head around baby led weaning you really need to switch off the voice that says he needs to eat so and so much solids at such and such an age. The reality is that milk provides the best balance of nutrition for your baby until they are a year old and anything else is complementary to it. So if baby just wants to bash his food about on a tray or squish it through his fingers then so be it.

4. Babies don’t need baby food, they just need food!
You often hear people complaining about how expensive baby food is, and I think there is a common misconception that babies need a certain type of food, ie super mushy until they are 6 months, mushy with bits from 7 months etc which is probably derived from clever marketing by baby food manufacturers that has told us this is the way it must be done and here are the wonderful products we can sell you to do it.

But the reality is babies just need food, normal food like you and me. Ok, so a 6 month old baby with no teeth may not be able to crunch a carrot stick, but he can still stick it in his mouth, and experience the sensation of taste and texture. The founding principle of Baby Led Weaning is that its ok for a baby to eat something as long as they are developmentally able to eat it, so no need to puree or spend a fortune on age specific items, just let baby pick off your plate or give them a plate of your food from the beginning.

There are just a few things to watch out for. Too much sugar or salt is bad for us all, particularly for the developing body of a baby so best be cautious with these, and the other big one to watch out for is honey, which apparently can cause infant botchulism. And of course, no baby should be left on his own to eat unsupervised.

5. Meal times are family times
Freeing yourself both from thinking baby needs to eat something different to you and needs to be spoon fed makes it easier for baby to join in with family mealtimes. This isn’t perhaps a founding principle of baby led weaning, but its a social benefit that comes from it that I think is hugely important. If everybody eats together and eats the same, not only does it make life simpler but it gives great family time.

Little Nw is now approaching 10 months, and whenever I take him out to eat people are always amazed at his coordination and his enthusiasm for food and I put this down to baby led weaning. By letting him do things at his own pace, have fun with food and not single his mealtimes out as something seperate from our own we’re seeing a little man develop who is as exited about the diversity of foods and flavours out there as I am, and that’s really important to me. So what do other mum’s think? Do you agree, and what does baby led weaning mean to you?

Before I finish up, I just wanted to share my my top tip for baby led weaning - get an easily wipeable floor and a dog!xxx

Boy Brand

In CategoryHow Green is your Mammy

Last week Dw was 3, and I found it really hard to find him a present.

In many ways, it should have been easy. Dw has by now started developing his own tastes and the world is full of items marketed to 3 year old boys. But the problem lies in the conflict between what I know he will like and what I want him to have.

I could go out and spend a fortune on the latest {insert Tv character name here} themed gadget, but to be honest, I’m quite cautious of giving in to buying him gifts related to TV shows.

I want him to have toys that will stimulate his imagination, engage him in creative play and show him that there is fun to be had outside the realms of television merchandise.

So, although he loves a certain fire man, the choice for his main pressie this year was this:

Now I believe plan toys are actually changing the fire engine design, which is a shame in some ways, as its really nice, but it could do with a couple of minor improvements.

1. the rope that winches the ladder up gets loose far too easily meaning the extending ladder bit keeps falling off.
2. There are a few too many small parts (such as detachable hydrantss) for my liking. Fine for a child Dw’s age but a bit of a pain if you have a younger sibling about and have to be on constant vigil.

Other than that this is a great toy, and little man has great fun pretending to drench me with his fireman’s hose! I can’t help but feel that he’ll get much more pleasure out of something like this, where he can create his own games and explore his own imaginary world, than that initially buzz he might get from a product with a character he recognizes blazened across it.

There was one thing we conceded on when it comes to tv characters though, and I must say they were quite a hit ☺
